Error codeF9E1
ApplianceWasher
Quick answer
F9E1 is a drain-related code on Whirlpool compact ventless towers, laundry towers and front load washers.
Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so F9E1 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

What this codemay mean.
A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.
Mean
F9E1 signals a drainage problem: abnormal drainage, blocked drain pump or long drain time.
F9E1 is a drainage code, and Whirlpool describes it a little differently by washer type.
Compact ventless laundry towers
The washer section shows F9E1 for abnormal drainage.
Laundry towers
The potential cause is a blocked drain pump. Clean the drain pump, using the owner’s manual to reach it. Then cycle power by disconnecting the washer for 5 minutes. If F9E1 returns, schedule service.
Front load washers
Here the code means a long drain time: the washer cannot drain correctly. Check these four things.
Drain hose installation. The hose should not extend more than 4.5″ (113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub, or water can siphon back into the washer. The U-shape hose form from the Installation Instructions gives the right length. Maximum hose height is 96″ from the bottom of the washer.
Drainpipe cover. Do not tape the hose into the drainpipe. It should be loose but secure, with a gap for air to break suction.
Drain pump filter. On some models it sits behind the bottom dispenser drawer and needs occasional cleaning. See the Owner’s Manual.
Door seal (bellow). Small drain holes inside it can clog and slow draining.
A washer that will not drain after these checks may need a technician. Call (310) 448-6692 or go to washer repair, with F9E1, the model number and the drain checks you completed at hand.
Stop immediately if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning smell, gas odor, or water near electrical parts.

Important
Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
