Wall-mount, island, and under-cabinet Whirlpool hoods only work if grease-laden air can reach the blower and then leave through ductwork or a recirculating filter. Homeowners often assume the motor is dead when the baffle filters are simply packed. The opposite also happens: filters look clean, but the blower wheel is so coated that it cannot spin up.
Downdraft systems add a lift motor and a different duct path. Weak suction there is as likely to be a crushed run in the cabinet as a failed fan. Lights and control buttons can fail independently of the blower; a dark hood is not automatically a ventilation failure.
If the hood is over a gas cooktop, treat a dead fan as more than an inconvenience. You still need air movement when burners are on. We will tell you whether the hood can stay in limited use or should stay off until the repair is done.

Filters are only the inlet. A packed blower wheel or a crushed duct will still choke the hood.
A new rattle often means the wheel is hitting the housing or a mount is loose. Worth diagnosing before the motor seizes.
Some hoods can be converted with a charcoal kit if the manual allows it. That is a setup change, not a repair for a dead motor.
