Top-load and front-load Whirlpool washers both refuse to spin if they still hold a tub of water or if the lock never confirms closed. That looks like a “dead motor” from the hallway. It often is not. Front-loaders add a door boot that can leak at the gasket or the drain hose behind the cabinet. Top-loaders add lid switches and, on some designs, an agitator or impeller that can fail while spin still works.
Odors, especially on front-load machines, are often leftover moisture and detergent, not a failed drum. We will say so when that is the case instead of selling a part for a cleaning problem.
If the washer is leaking onto the floor, stop the cycle, bail what you can with a pan if it is safe, and keep people off wet tile near the outlet.

We establish whether the washer still holds water. Spin will not happen on a tub that never emptied.

A lock that never clicks in will cancel the cycle. We test that before the drive.

Drain pump and hose
Coin traps, kinked standpipes, and pumps that hum but do not move water are common on both platforms.

Drive, bearings, and balance
If the tub is empty and the lock is good, we test the motor and look for a failed tub bearing or a load that the suspension cannot handle.

Many washers will not spin with water still in the tub or with a lock that never closed. We check those before the motor.
Not if it leaks or the door will not lock. A machine that merely stops on bulky blankets can sometimes finish a redistributed load; if it repeats, stop.
A pump grind often shows up at drain. A bearing growl gets louder in spin. We confirm with the cabinet open rather than guessing from the hallway.
