A dishwasher that will not start is usually waiting on the door latch, a control lock, a delayed start, or power. Work through those four outside checks before suspecting the control, and stop if there is water on the floor.
Before a dishwasher will wash, the door has to prove it is closed and the control has to be awake. A slightly lifted door from a pan that does not belong, a child lock, and a tripped breaker produce the same “dead machine” stare.
If water is already on the floor, do not keep tapping Start. Kill power and stop.
Whirlpool Product Help lists the same starting points for a dishwasher that is not starting: power at the breaker, a fully latched door, the water supply valve, a control lock, and a delayed start. It also notes that a lower rack installed backward can keep the door from latching, which is an easy mistake after reloading or cleaning.

Close the door firmly until it clicks. Look for a lock or key icon on the console — those are easy to set by leaning on the panel. Cancel a stuck cycle if the manual shows a cancel combination, then try Start again.
A lit lock icon means the control lock is on and every button is disabled. On locked models, pressing a button makes the light flash three times. Some Whirlpool guides describe turning the lock off by holding the Control Lock button for about three seconds, and the control may need waking first, so check the steps for your model.
A delay wash postpones the cycle, sometimes to off-peak hours, so a machine that looks idle may simply be waiting. Cancel it with Cancel/Drain if you want the cycle to start now.
Confirm the under-sink supply valve is open. Confirm the breaker that feeds the dishwasher has not tripped. A dark console after a kitchen GFCI trip is power, not a new control board.
Codes on Whirlpool dishwashers appear as F and E numbers. Digital models show them directly, such as F#E#. Models with flashing lights give the number in two sets: count the first set of flashes as the F number, pause, then count the second set as the E number. Seven flashes, a pause, and one flash would read as F7-E1.
Product Help gives examples, including F8E4 for water in the drip tray, F7E2 for a wash motor error, and H20 for water not being detected. It adds that exact codes vary by model, so treat any table as a lead rather than a diagnosis.
If water is involved, where it shows up helps. Whirlpool’s leak guide says water at the front or door area usually points to the gasket, too many suds, or a spray arm, water at the bottom center to a pump seal, sump, or overfill, and water behind or under the cabinet to hose connections, the inlet valve, or the drain line.
Use dishwasher detergent only, never dish soap, because suds can push water out. Make sure the unit is level side to side and front to back. A leak that continues after those steps, or a suspected inlet valve or cracked tub, is a reason to book service. Until then, keep the breaker off and the water valve closed.
A latch that never makes, a touch panel that is dead after you verified power, or a code that returns immediately is diagnosis. Write the code down. Do not assume it matches a code on a different Whirlpool product. Do not remove the inner door to “check the ribbon cable.” Whirlpool’s power reset is to press Cancel, then switch the breaker off or unplug the dishwasher for about a minute before restoring power.
A reset helps only when the control was confused. If it returns to the same code or the same silence afterward, the cause is more likely a latch, switch, or board than a setting. Stop and book a diagnosis if there is a burning smell, visible wiring damage, or a breaker that trips again.
Power on the console only tells you the control is awake. A door that is not latched, a control lock, a delay wash, or a closed water valve can each keep the cycle from beginning.
A lit lock icon means buttons are disabled, and many Whirlpool guides describe holding the Control Lock button for about three seconds. The exact steps depend on the model, so confirm them in your own use-and-care manual.
A single reset is reasonable: press Cancel, cut power for about a minute at the plug or breaker, and restore it. If the same problem returns, another reset will not fix it and the machine needs a diagnosis.
