A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard, and it is the first thing to rule out when clothes take longer to dry. Clean the lint screen every load, check the hose and outdoor cap, and stop using the dryer if it overheats or smells scorched.
Every load adds lint. The screen catches the easy stuff. The hose, the wall run, and the cap catch the rest. When that path clogs, the dryer runs hot, the clothes stay damp, and the thermal fuse on electric models eventually opens.
This is not the place to “see if one more cycle helps” after you smell scorching.
Whirlpool Product Help lists these signs of a blocked or restricted vent: longer dry times, a dryer exterior that is very warm, moisture inside the dryer or on the display, and little lint on the screen. A quick airflow test is to remove the screen, set the dryer to an air-only cycle, and see how little air reaches the lint area.

Clean the screen before it looks furry. Pull the dryer straight out — not by walking it on the hose — and check for a crushed or coiled plastic hose. Rigid or semi-rigid metal is what most installations should have used; cheap vinyl accordion hose kinks and collects lint in every rib. Whirlpool recommends heavy metal rigid or flexible vent and says foil and plastic are not recommended because they can collapse or crush.
Whirlpool advises cleaning the lint screen after every use. Fabric softener can leave an invisible film on the screen even when it looks clean, so wash it occasionally rather than only brushing off the lint. Never run the dryer without a screen.
The display can also point toward airflow. Whirlpool says AF, Check Vent, or F4E3 mean restricted airflow from a clogged lint screen or vent, a crushed or kinked vent, or too many turns, and that the dryer keeps running while you clear the cause. Touch any key to clear the message after fixing it.
Outside, the damper should move when the dryer runs. Birds, lint, and a cap that was painted shut all count as a blockage. If you cannot see the termination, you cannot certify the run is clear.
Keep the vent short and straight. Whirlpool’s guidance is that a run should stay within the limits in the Vent System Chart in the installation instructions for the model, since overlong or crooked systems lengthen dry times and shorten dryer life. Those limits differ between models, so use your own installation instructions instead of a general figure.
The exhaust hood outside should sit at least 12 inches from the ground or any obstruction, and nesting birds, rodents, and debris can block it. How often the whole run needs cleaning depends on use and the manual, and sooner if drying times grow.
Do not dry items that have ever had a flammable substance on them, and do not run the dryer without the lint screen in place. Check the exterior vent cover regularly, because nests and debris collect there. Two other messages are worth knowing: PF means a power failure, and holding Start resumes the cycle, while L2 appears only at first installation and points to low or no line voltage. Electric dryers use two breakers, so check both.
If the display alternates F and E numbers, the dryer is asking for service rather than for cleaning.
Long concealed runs, crushed wall ducts, and lint packed in an elbow behind drywall are not lint-screen jobs. If the accessible hose is open and the dryer still overheats or takes two cycles, stop using it until the heat and the hidden duct are checked.
Not every slow load is lint. Whirlpool notes that EcoBoost, which is on by default only for Regular or Normal, uses slightly lower heat and lengthens the cycle, and touching ECOBOOST turns it off. An automatic cycle usually dries best. Check the setting before assuming the vent is blocked, but do not skip the screen and hood check either.
Longer dry times, a very warm dryer exterior, moisture inside the dryer, and little lint on the screen are the signs Whirlpool lists. A weak flow of air at the outside hood is another clue.
Clean the lint screen after every load, and clear the whole vent run at the interval your manual gives, sooner if drying takes longer. The right schedule depends on the model and how much laundry you dry.
