Error code LF
Appliance Washer
Quick answer

LF, also shown as F8 E1, means a long fill. The manual points to the drain hose and the water supply.

Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so LF may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Whirlpool

What this code may mean.

A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.

The washer is taking too long to fill, which may point to a drain hose or water supply problem.

What LF means

On a Whirlpool top load washer, LF (long fill) or F8 E1 in the display means the washer is taking too long to fill. The manual says either code may indicate a problem with the water supply going to the washer.

Drain hose installation

The drain hose may extend more than 4.5 in. (114 mm) into the standpipe. Any of these hose issues can make the washer siphon, filling and draining at the same time, so it never reaches the expected level. The manual lists these checks:

  • Use the U-shaped drain hose form and attach the hose securely to the drainpipe or tub.
  • Keep only 4.5 in. (113 mm) of hose in the drainpipe.
  • Do not tape over the drain opening.
  • The minimum drainpipe height is 39 in. (99 cm).
  • Straighten any kink and remove any blockage from the drainpipe of the utility sink.

Water supply

Make sure both inlet hoses are connected and both the hot and cold water supplies are turned on. The washer has sensors for the water supply and needs water going to the water valve through both hoses. If it does not detect both, the control detects a problem with the water pressure sensor, the lid locks and the machine goes into pump-out mode for 8 minutes.

Related codes

  • Ld – long drain, the opposite problem of draining slowly.
  • HC – hot and cold inlet hoses reversed.
  • Int – the cycle was paused or canceled.
