Error code L2
Appliance Dryer
Quick answer

L2 (low or no line voltage): a possible home power supply problem that keeps the dryer's heater off.

Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so L2 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Whirlpool

What this code may mean.

A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.

Low or no line voltage; possible home power supply problem.

L2 stands for Low or No Line Voltage. It tells you the problem may be in the home power supply, and that the dryer’s heater is not able to turn on. The dryer keeps running with the code showing, and touching any pad clears it back to the estimated time remaining.

Where it applies

The code is listed for commercial-grade residential dryers, standard dryers and HybridCare dryers. On HybridCare models the manual calls it a diagnostic code and notes that it only shows during the initial installation.

What to check, in order

  1. Check the household fuses or circuit breakers. An electric dryer uses two, one for the motor circuit and one for the heating element, and a tripped one can leave the dryer without heat. It needs a 30-amp circuit fused on both sides of the line.
  2. Confirm the power cord is installed correctly, following the installation instructions. Unplug the dryer before you look at the terminal screws, and make sure they are tight.
  3. Cycle the power: turn the breaker or breakers off for one minute, turn them on, start a Timed Dry heated cycle and watch for one minute to see whether the code returns.

Electric dryers need a 240-volt supply. If the message persists, have a qualified electrician verify the electrical supply.

Related codes

  • PF appears after a power failure interrupts the cycle.
  • hE is a heating error with temperature too low or too high.
