Whirlpool Dryer AF (Check Vent) Error Code

Whirlpool

Code overview at a glance.

The facts for this Whirlpool error, a plain-language snapshot, and what to confirm against your model number.

Error code AF / Check Vent
Appliance Dryer
Quick answer

AF means restricted air flow on Whirlpool dryers, and Check Vent is a related light on certain models. Clean the lint screen and vent.

Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so AF / Check Vent may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Whirlpool

What this code may mean.

A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.

AF (Restricted Air Flow) indicates the lint screen or vent is clogged.

An AF code means restricted air flow: the lint screen or the vent is clogged, or the vent may be crushed, kinked or have too many turns. On commercial-grade residential Whirlpool dryers this is shown as AF. On certain other dryer models the same problem can light a Check Vent indicator.

The Check Vent light

Check Vent is available for Automatic Cycles only, on certain models. During the sensing phase at the start of a cycle, the light comes on if a blocked vent or low airflow is detected, and it stays on for that whole cycle. It clears when the cycle ends, when you touch Power, or when you open the door.

The dryer keeps running while AF or the light is present, but poor airflow can lengthen dry times and affect performance. Touching any key clears the AF code from the display.

What to try

  • Clean the lint screen.
  • Look for a crushed or kinked vent run between the dryer and the wall.
  • Confirm that the vent run is free of lint and debris.
  • Confirm that the outside exhaust hood is free of lint and debris.
  • Check the vent system against the recommended run length and number of elbows in the installation instructions.

To test airflow, run the dryer for 5-10 minutes and hold a hand under the outside hood. If the air movement is weaker than a hair dryer on high, clean the lint from the whole system and the hood.

Next, select a Timed Dry heated cycle and restart. If the message persists, have the entire home venting run cleaned by a venting specialist.
