What this codemay mean.
A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.
Mean
The cooktop has overheated.
C81 and C83 are two codes for the same message on Whirlpool electric and radiant cooktops: the cooktop has overheated. Here is the order the manual follows.
Cool the cooktop first
Turn every surface control to OFF.
Check that nothing is limiting airflow to the bottom of the cooktop. If the cooktop is not installed above an oven, open the cabinet doors and look for items restricting airflow underneath, then move them away.
If the oven is running, turn it off.
The surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated. Wait 5 minutes for it to cool down, then turn the cooktop back on and verify operation.
If the code comes back
Reset the power: turn the circuit breaker(s) off for one minute, then on again. Monitor the cooktop for one minute to see whether the code displays, and verify operation.
Related codes
Related entries: C82 is the surface-area overheat code that shuts the cooktop off; E2 also switches the controls off when the cooktop runs too hot.
